Good morning in italian: Introduction

Buongiorno

This is the most common translation and it literally means good day. Typically, Italians use buongiorno as a greeting until around 5pm, after which they switch to Buonasera! (Good evening!)

BUONA GIORNATA

Buona giornata also means good morning/good day but it is only ever used at the end of a conversation, so the more accurate translation would be Have a good morning! / Have a good day!

BUONA MATTINATA

This expression is never used on its own as a greeting but you may hear it in the phrase Ti auguro una buona mattinata! (I wish you a good morning!)

BUONDÌ

In the past, buondì (or buon dì) was the primary form of greeting, and buongiorno a secondary option. Today, the roles have been reversed.

'GIORNO / 'NGIORNO

Just as English speakers abbreviate Good morning! to just Morning! or Mornin’, it is also possible to leave out the buon in Buongiorno!
