While technically speaking, the Vatican City is not actually in Italy, it is located in the heart of Rome. This extraterritorial country is the home of the Pope. You can visit the Vatican by attending mass, or by taking a tour. There are many different ticket options depending on which tour combinations you want, but I highly recommend a tour that includes both a visit to the Vatican museums and the Sistine Chapel. Cameras and conversation are forbidden inside the chapel, but feasting your eyes on the frescoes covering the walls and ceiling – particularly Michelangelo’s The Last Judgement – is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Entry into St. Peter’s Basilica is free for general admittance; you can stop in after your guided tour of the Vatican museums before heading back into Italian territory.

With general admittance, you can enjoy a display of its history and walk along two tiers of spectator seats. If you plan your trip in advance, try to get in on a tour into the Underground and see the Colosseum from the Gladiators’ perspective. Act fast, however, because this tour is extremely popular, limited in numbers, and sells out quickly.

The Santa Maria del Fiore, better known to Florentines as the Duomo, is a magnificent cathedral in the heart of Florence. It is comprised of multiple points of interest, each one requiring a separate ticket: the campanile, baptistery, cupola (dome), museum, terrace, and the church of Santa Reparata (which includes the crypts).

Entry into the cathedral itself is free of charge, but the line to enter is typically longer than my patience. Instead, purchase a combo ticket to view the church’s greatest features. I could sing praises of the views from atop the cupola and the campanile for the rest of my life. The birds-eye-view of Florence is indescribable.

One of the duplicates can be found atop a hill in Piazzale Michelangelo, a grand piazza that offers magnificent views of Florence. The trip to the top makes for a great post-dinner walk, not to mention being an extremely romantic destination in the evening.

The Doge’s Palace acted as both the court system and the prison system of Venice. On one side of the canal, the Doge lived and worked with his fellow judiciaries. On the other side, the gloomy prison held its captives waiting for their freedom or eventual execution. This prison also became well-known for holding, and later losing, the infamous Casanova.

For a more interesting story, I recommend signing up for the guided Secret Itineraries tour, which takes you through the prisons and the more macabre rooms hidden in the Palace. Over the course of the tour, your guide will describe for you the amazing tale of Casanova, the first and only prisoner to successfully escape from the prison.

In the daylight hours, gondolieri will bring you around the canals and allow you to take in unique views of the city. After the sun goes down, the set ride prices do increase, but the romantic air of Venice also increases exponentially. Grab your loved one and enjoy a romantic night out that is incomparable to anything else. Some gondolieri might even serenade you with a traditional tune while you float along the canals.

Venice is a conglomerate of 117 islands, most interconnected by pedestrian bridges. There are a few islands, however, that are a bit further away than the rest and are only accessible by water crafts. If you take a water taxi or waterbus, you can visit the industrial island of Murano, famous for its many glass- blowing factories. You can schedule a formal tour of any of the biggest factories on the island, or stop by any of the smaller workshops and watch from the window for a few minutes. If you had any fantasies of buying a precious souvenir of blown glass, like an artistic figurine or a fine wine chalice, purchase it from the island of Murano.

Interestingly enough, the first thing I am going to recommend you do when visiting Naples, is get out of Naples. The city of Naples is big, offering a lot of options for lodging and transportation. From here, you can rent a car (for the brave of heart), or hire a driver to take you and your travel companions on a trip around the Amalfi coast.

Near the base of Mount Vesuvius lie the remains of the ancient city of Pompeii. In the archeological park of Pompeii, you can walk through the preserved streets and buildings of the city once buried in ash. The unique structure of the city streets, beautiful frescoes and mosaics, and functional vases and containers are still on display. You can walk for hours through the uncovered neighbourhoods. There are remains of amphitheaters, houses, gardens, markets, shrines, and even a brothel available to view. And the most amazing part? Upon your second visit to the ruins of Pompeii, there will be more to see! Archeologists are still at work right there in the park, uncovering even more preserved pieces of history.
