But what is there to do in Florence when you need a break from museums? To put it short, a lot. There is so much to see and do in the artistic city of Firenze. Tuscany has more to offer than just old artefacts and paintings; it also has fun and unique attractions. These are the top ten things to do in Florence that are not museums.

For an incredible view of Florence that is hard to compare, trek up a hill to Piazzale Michelangelo. This large hilltop piazza prominently displays one of the two David statue replicas (the other is outside of Palazzo Vecchio, and the original is sheltered inside the Accademia Gallery), which lights up with glorious colors after the sun goes down. Without a doubt, sunset is the perfect time to visit this location. Before then, there is also a lovely little garden along the same hillside called the Rose Garden which closes in the early evening. Consider a trip to the garden in the later afternoon followed by a romantic moment at sunset at the piazzale’s edge.

This shop has been dubbed “the oldest pharmacy in the world” for good reason: it has been selling herbal goods and remedies since 1221. Today, it sells a wide variety of scented products like perfumes, moisturizers, candles, and diffusers. Even if the thought of bringing home a sweet-smelling souvenir doesn’t enthuse you, a quick walk through the building is an experience in and of itself. It still retains its old-time charm, but is decorated with modern floral arrangements and the walls are lined with shiny new merchandise. If you are traveling with a teenager or young adult, be sure to give them an extra minute inside the pharmacy. The aesthetic inside lends to the perfect photo-op.

There are many cathedrals that house decorative altars, striking crosses, and incredible medieval or gothic arches. If you have a spare moment, step into the Santa Maria del Fiore (more commonly referred to as “the Duomo”), the basilica of Santa Croce, the abbey of San Miniato al Monte, the basilica of San Lorenzo, or the Santa Maria del Carmine.

Instead of simply looking at beautiful things, consider purchasing some! Florence was once a major fashion center. Still today some people consider it the 5th Fashion Capital of the World. Take a stroll up and down Via de’ Tornabuoni (a street I now affectionately refer to as “Luxury Road”) and see for yourself just how many luxury fashion brands line the street. Versace, BVLGARI, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Prada, Tiffany & Co, and Ferragamo all have boutique stores on this street.

Mercato Centrale offers you the opportunity to purchase Italian food however you want it. On the main floor, there is a market bursting with vendors selling fresh fish and produce, pre-packaged pastas, and fine olive and truffle oils. Up the stairs, you can find a bustling food court offering all of your favorite Italian drinks, treats, and quick meals.

However, it has a few separate entrances that allow you to bypass the big building filled with old things so that you can skip straight to a vast array of greenery and outdoor decorations. In peak season, these gardens are filled with beautifully blooming plants and trees. Interspersed throughout the gardens are unique fountains and other exterior ornaments and furniture. It also makes for a great picnic location.

This tradition dates as far back as 1766. While there, you might as well wander through the market and see if any of the leather goods catch your eye.
