Title: Pro e Contro di Vivere in Italia (da Americani)
Some Americans were born with souls meant to wander the Earth; we call them “expats”. Others were descended from immigrants, and now want to return to the patria (“homeland”). Another subset of people found the other half of their heart in the heart of an Italian citizen, and promptly married their other half. All three of these unique types of people probably have found themselves, at one point or another, considering moving away from their American country of origin, to the magnificent peninsula of Italy. Whatever your reason for wanting to move to Italy, it’s important that you understand the perks and the drawbacks of living abroad, specifically in Italy, as an American citizen. I present to you, according to my humble opinion, the pros and cons of living out the “American dream” as an American living outside of America.
Alcuni americani sono nati con un’anima destinata a vagare per il mondo; li chiamiamo “expat”. Altri discendono da immigrati e desiderano tornare nel paese di origine. Altri ancora si sono innamorati di cittadini italiani che poi hanno sposato. Tutte queste persone probabilmente si sono trovate prima o poi a pensare di trasferirsi dal loro paese di origine in America alla meravigliosa penisola italiana. Indipendentemente dal motivo che vi spinge a volervi trasferire in Italia, è importante conoscere vantaggi e svantaggi di vivere all’estero, in particolare in Italia, da cittadini americani. The cost of living in the United States is much higher than it is in Italy. But, the average salary fits the culture’s budget. This means that, even though daily expenditures in the United States are higher, Americans also tend to earn a higher income. Similarly, Italians spend less money daily, but also earn less in their incomes. What makes this a “pro”? Because if you are an expat still working for an American company and making an American-level income while living it Italy, your income is going to be exponentially higher than your spending habits in Italy. You will get way more “bang for your buck” while living in Italy on an American income.
But if you work for an Italian company…
Il costo della vita negli Stati Uniti è molto più alto che in Italia. Ma la retribuzione media è adeguata allo stile di vita locale. Ciò significa che, anche se le spese quotidiane negli Stati Uniti sono più alte, è anche vero che gli americani tendono a guadagnare di più. Con: Low Italian salaries

Sorry. To match the lower Italian cost of living, the average Italian salary is much lower than you might be used to in the States. You will still be able to eke out an average living with your average income, but you won’t be setting aside as much in your savings account monthly as your expat friends working for American companies. This can be especially frustrating if you have recurring payments to make in America, like paying off student loans, because the payments are much higher than your income (comparatively speaking).

Groceries in Italy are much more reasonably priced. Fresh produce and bakery items are a sound economic choice. Italians make a trip to their local supermarket daily to purchase fresh ingredients for their traditionally healthier meals.

Con: Pricey travel back to the States

Travelling roundtrip from Minneapolis, USA to Boston, USA costs about the same (actually, a little bit more) than a trip from Rome, Italy to Madrid, Spain. A roundtrip journey from Boston, USA to Rome, Italy costs approximately four times as much! Travelling back to the States is important for expats so that we can spend time with our loved ones still living there. But the price of travelling for every wedding, funeral, and baby’s first birthday will add up.
Il viaggio di andata e ritorno da Minneapolis a Boston costa all’incirca (in realtà, un po’ di più) quanto un viaggio da Roma a Madrid. Un viaggio di andata e ritorno da Boston a Roma, invece, costa circa quattro volte tanto! Pro: National, universal healthcare!

Legal residents in Italy have the same right to Italy’s national universal healthcare as Italian citizens do. This is wonderful, because you can get free (or extremely low-cost) medical consultations and even free emergency dental care. Even for non-legal residents, the healthcare system is still a “pro” because all healthcare costs much less in Italy than it does in the United States. You can get a ride to the hospital in an ambulance, seen by emergency care doctors, and treated for your medical condition all for less than €100.
Coloro che risiedono regolarmente in Italia hanno diritto alla stessa assistenza sanitaria nazionale universale dei cittadini italiani. Questa è una cosa meravigliosa, perché significa che si possono ottenere visite mediche gratuite (o estremamente economiche), comprese le cure odontoiatriche di emergenza. Because healthcare is so cheap, people do not hesitate about calling a doctor. Residents will make a trip to the hospital for a low fever just because they can. Because of this, Italian hospitals are often crowded, and doctors are extremely busy. Unless your case is severe, you may be waiting for a long while before you are finally seen by a doctor.
Dal momento che l’assistenza sanitaria è così economica, le persone non si fanno problemi a chiamare il medico. I residenti vanno spesso in ospedale anche per una semplice febbre solo perché possono. È per questo motivo che gli ospedali italiani sono spesso affollati e i medici sempre impegnati. Pro: Italian is a beautiful language!

Ciao, bella, come stai? The Italian language is beautiful! Italian accents are pleasing on the ears, and the language flows delightfully off of their tongues. And, for native English speakers, Italian is one of the easiest foreign languages for us to learn and acquire, according to linguistics studies.
Ciao bella, come stai? La lingua italiana è bellissima! Gli accenti sono così piacevoli all’orecchio e le loro lingue producono parole così incantevoli. Inoltre, secondo alcuni studi di linguistica, l’italiano è una delle lingue straniere più semplici da imparare e acquisire per i madrelingua inglesi.
Con: Bureaucratic Italian ≠ Standard Italian

Unfortunately, there are no language classes that can prepare you for the archaic extravagance of bureaucratic Italian. If you have never read a letter or email from the Questura, Prefettura, or any other government-run agency, you likely do not understand what I am talking about – but picture if William Shakespeare attempted to write a sonnet in Italian, and make the subject matter extremely important to comprehend. That is what bureaucratic Italian looks like, and for Italian-language learners and natives alike, it makes no sense. There is no language book or class that can help you to make heads or tails of that bureaucratic gibberish.
Purtroppo, non esistono corsi di lingua che preparino alle arcaiche stravaganze dell’italiano burocratico. Se non avete mai letto una lettera o un’e-mail scritta dalla Questura, dalla Prefettura o da qualsiasi altra agenzia della pubblica amministrazione, probabilmente non capirete di cosa sto parlando – ma pensate a William Shakespeare che prova a scrivere un sonetto in italiano e che l’argomento da lui trattato sia estremamente importante da comprendere. Ecco, questo è l’italiano burocratico, una cosa senza senso sia per gli studenti di lingua italiana che per gli italiani stessi. Non esiste un libro o un corso di lingua in grado di aiutare a capire questo incomprensibile linguaggio burocratico.
Pro: Most everyone speaks English to some degree

If you are a Millennial or younger, you probably remember being required to learn Spanish or French in grade school. The same thing happened to most Italians, except that they were required to learn English, and get the chance to practice their English skills regularly. In bigger cities, many Italians are pretty proficient, especially those working in the service, hospitality, and tourism sectors.

That being said, not everyone will be willing to use the English they have learned with you. Some of the most important people you will need to speak to will expect you to speak only Italian. Workers at the Questura, Prefettura, and the healthcare system office typically make a point of not accommodating foreigners’ languages. In other words, you will need to try your best Italian when speaking with people in these very important offices.
Detto questo, non tutti saranno disposti a usare l’inglese che hanno imparato. Alcune delle persone più importanti con cui dovrete interfacciarvi si aspettano che voi parliate solo in italiano. Chi lavora in Questura, in Prefettura e alla ASL in genere non si adatta a parlare le lingue degli stranieri. In altre parole, quando avete a che fare con queste importanti funzioni dovrete sfoggiare il vostro miglior italiano.
Pro: The expat community is strong

Italy is a popular destination for many Americans choosing to live abroad. The American expat community is very strong in Italy, meaning that you won’t ever feel alone. Florence and Rome are especially big for expats. If an expat is feeling homesick for the States and wishes they could hear a familiar American accent, or celebrate Thanksgiving with fellow Americans, new expat friends are not hard to find.
L’Italia è una destinazione popolare tra gli americani che scelgono di vivere all’estero. Qui la community di expat americani è molto forte, il che significa che non vi sentirete mai soli. Firenze e Roma sono tra le mete più gettonate. Non sarà difficile trovare nuovi amici expat per chi ha nostalgia di casa e desidera sentire un accento familiare o festeggiare il Ringraziamento con altri americani.
Con: Not being fluent can create a barrier in building friendships

While most Italians are willing and able to use English in an emergency situation to help a lost or confused foreigner, many are hesitant to engage in casual conversation in English. Unless you are confident in your Italian skills, or willing to try your very best, it may be difficult to build relationships with your native Italian neighbors.
Se da un lato la maggior parte degli italiani riesce ed è disposta a usare l’inglese in situazioni di emergenza per aiutare uno straniero smarrito o confuso, dall’altro molti sono riluttanti a intrattenere una conversazione in inglese. Se non parlate bene l’italiano o non siete disposti a fare del vostro meglio, potrebbe essere difficile costruire relazioni con i vostri vicini italiani.
Pro: Italians are the warmest and most loving humans you will ever meet!

Once you have made an Italian friend, you will quickly understand that they can be some of the warmest and most loving humans you will ever meet. Italians make for the best of friends.

Con: Smoking
Contro: fumare
The United States has put in great efforts to reduce the popularity of smoking in the country. So much so that most people my age find the habit to be sickening and unsophisticated. In Italy, however, smoking is still a highly popular social activity. Smoking breaks are completely normal at work or in social settings. People openly smoke while walking. It is far more prevalent in Italy than in the States.
Gli Stati Uniti hanno fatto grandi sforzi per ridurre la popolarità del fumo nel paese. Tanto che la maggior parte delle persone della mia età pensa che fumare sia un’abitudine disgustosa e poco sofisticata. In Italia, invece, fumare è ancora un’attività socialmente molto diffusa. Le pause per fumare sono del tutto normali al lavoro o in contesti sociali. Le persone fumano tranquillamente mentre camminano. In Italia si fuma molto di più che negli Stati Uniti.
Pro: Violent crime rates are substantially lower

Watching the evening news in the United States can be a major downer. I won’t list the graphic details of what I saw on the 10 o’clock news most nights in the States, but I will say that it was tragic, violent, and absolutely appalling. These sort of incidents are a rarity in Italy, not a daily occurrence.
Guardare il Tg della sera negli Stati Uniti può essere molto deprimente. Non entrerò nel dettaglio di ciò che vedevo al Tg delle 10 quasi tutte le sere negli Stati Uniti, ma mi limiterò a dire che era qualcosa di tragico, violento e assolutamente spaventoso. What is a daily occurrence, however, is catcalling. As a woman, I can attest that I get catcalled daily. I would even go so far as to say that I get catcalled in Italy for more frequently than I ever did in the States.
Un fenomeno molto diffuso è invece il catcalling. Come donna, posso dire di essere oggetto di catcalling ogni giorno. Direi persino di esserne vittima in Italia più di quanto non lo sia mai stata negli Stati Uniti.
Pro: Catcallers are subtle

(Does this even count as a “pro”?) It really isn’t a benefit, but it is an improvement. Instead of being loudly hollered at or even whistled at, I typically hear quiet compliments or “how you doin’?”-style remarks. Men that catcall merely talk at the air about you rather than pursuing you and genuinely trying to catch your attention.
(Vale come “pro”?) In realtà non lo definirei un vantaggio, ma un miglioramento. Invece di grida e fischi, di solito sento apprezzamenti sottovoce o commenti del tipo “come te la passi?”. Spesso gli uomini si limitano a parlare di te all’aria anziché inseguirti e cercare di attirare a tutti i costi la tua attenzione.
Con: Organized crime has a strong hold in the south

The infamous name of the Mafia has a story behind it. While the legends may be distorted by time and distance, the fact is that organized crime has in the past, and still does to this day, have a strong hold in Italy – particularly in the south.
La famigerata Mafia ha una storia alle spalle. E anche se miti e leggende possono essere distorti dal tempo e dalla distanza, la verità è che la criminalità organizzata aveva, e ha ancora oggi, una forte presa in Italia, in particolare al sud.
Pro: Getting up close and personal with (living) history!

Italy has a long and rich history, all beautifully preserved in the ancient cities, roadways, and buildings. The country itself feels like a giant museum where history comes to life. Everything you see seems to be historic and worthy of note.
L’Italia ha una lunga e ricca storia, meravigliosamente conservata nelle sue antiche città, strade e costruzioni. Il paese stesso sembra un gigantesco museo in cui la storia prende vita. Tutto ciò che si vede sembra essere storico e degno di nota.
Con: Every building is old
Contro: Ogni edificio è vecchio
From an aesthetic standpoint, the old buildings are charming. From a logistical standpoint, the old buildings can become a nuisance. Old buildings mean old plumbing, faulty electrical wiring, and worn- out materials. In the case of my neighborhood, this also meant mold problems and poor insulation. All of this lead to high heating bills, constant building restorations, and living with a near-constant low-level cold. Achoo!
Da un punto di vista estetico, i vecchi edifici sono affascinanti. Da un punto di vista logistico, però, possono diventare una seccatura perché vogliono dire impianti idraulici vecchi, cavi elettrici difettosi e materiali usurati. Nel mio quartiere hanno anche problemi di muffa e scarso isolamento. Tutto ciò ha come conseguenza bollette del riscaldamento salate, continue ristrutturazioni e freddo quasi costante. Eccì!

Con: Savory breakfast is a no-no

Italians love a sweet breakfast. I confused a common breakfast item with cookies for a few months before I finally learned otherwise. Savory breakfasts are considered weird and, according to most Italians, do not promote a great start to your day. But I love scrambled eggs and breakfast sausage.
Gli italiani amano la colazione dolce. Per alcuni mesi ho pensato che un comune prodotto per la colazione fosse uno snack dolce prima di capire davvero di cosa si trattasse. Le colazioni salate sono considerate strane e, secondo la maggior parte degli italiani, non aiutano ad iniziare la giornata con il piede giusto. Ma io adoro le uova strapazzate con salsiccia a colazione.
Pro: Accommodating of food allergies and dietary restrictions

I had never seen gluten-free dry pasta before I moved to Italy. Now, I see entire shelves of gluten-free everything. There is dairy-free cheese offered in the same section as the regular cheese. And the best part is that these accommodating foods are the same price as the regular version!
Prima di trasferirmi in Italia non avevo mai visto la pasta secca senza glutine. Adesso invece trovo interi scaffali di prodotti senza glutine. Persino formaggi senza lattosio. E la cosa più bella è che questi particolari prodotti hanno lo stesso prezzo di quelli standard!
Con: Truly American food can be hard to find
Contro: trovare vero cibo americano può essere difficile
And other international ingredients too. Trying to find pecans so I could make pecan pie took a whole month and a trip to every single supermarket in a 4-neighborhood radius. American restaurants in Italy serve American food that tastes a bit off, much like how Olive Garden doesn’t quite taste the same as food made in Bologna.
E anche altri ingredienti internazionali. Ci ho messo un mese per girare tutti i supermercati di 4 quartieri e riuscire finalmente a trovare le noci pecan per preparare la pecan pie. Inoltre, il cibo servito dai ristoranti americani in Italia ha un sapore strano, un pò come i piatti dell’Olive Garden che non hanno niente a che vedere con il cibo preparato a Bologna.
Pro: No toxic work environments
Pro: nessun ambiente di lavoro tossico
Italians value their personal time. Because of this, they have mastered work/life balance. You would have to search far and wide to find a born-and-raised Italian with a “workaholic” personality.
Gli italiani ci tengono al loro tempo libero. Per questo sono veri maestri dell’equilibrio tra lavoro e vita privata. Trovare un italiano nato e cresciuto con una personalità “stacanovista” non è semplice
Con: Bureaucratic agencies work slowly
Contro: la pubblica amministrazione lavora lentamente
Tying back to the work/life balance point, Italians do not put in extra work beyond the requirements. So, comparing to the American way of life, Italian agencies can feel like they take ages to complete a task. Especially government agencies. Sometimes, you have to really nag in order to get anything done.
Tornando all’equilibrio tra lavoro e vita privata, gli italiani non lavorano più del necessario. Quindi, rispetto allo stile di vita americano, negli uffici italiani si ha la sensazione che ci vogliano anni per portare a termine un’attività. Soprattutto nella pubblica amministrazione. A volte devi davvero lamentarti per riuscire a ottenere qualcosa.
Pro: Healthy, actively lifestyles
Pro: stili di vita sani e attivi
I don’t often see locals going out for a run in the early mornings. Why? Because why do you need to set aside time to get active when being active is a natural part of your lifestyle? Italians don’t rush to grab the car keys every time they need to leave the house. If the destination is within walking distance, Italians are going to walk. Taking a walk together, especially after a meal to help with digestion, is a common social activity for families, couples, and friends.
Non vedo quasi mai la gente del posto uscire a correre la mattina presto. Come mai? Beh, perché dovrebbero dedicare del tempo all’attività fisica quando essere attivi è già parte naturale del loro stile di vita? Gli italiani non corrono a prendere le chiavi della macchina ogni volta che devono uscire di casa. Se la destinazione è raggiungibile a piedi, camminano. Fare una passeggiata insieme, soprattutto dopo un pasto per favorire la digestione, è un’attività sociale comune per famiglie, coppie e amici.
Con: High taxes
Contro: le tasse sono alte
Because Italy taxes based on residency, not citizenship, you will likely need to pay taxes to Italy. And the tax rate is high. It is the price Italians pay to have universal healthcare, among many other perks. On top of this, you will also still need to file taxes with the United States, because the US taxes based on citizenship, not residency.
Poiché le tasse italiane si basano sulla residenza, non sulla cittadinanza, probabilmente dovrete pagare le tasse in Italia. E l’aliquota fiscale qui è alta. È il prezzo che gli italiani pagano per avere, tra i tanti vantaggi, l’assistenza sanitaria universale. Luckily, the US tax system protects expats that earn foreign income (Americans working for an Italian company) from being double-taxed. You will still have to file your taxes, but you likely won’t actually owe the US much – if anything at all.

Yes! Italians drive on the correct, not-left side of the road. Unlike other European countries (cough cough England cough), Italian roadways don’t feel too alien to the American eye.
Ebbene sì! Gli italiani guidano sul lato corretto della strada, non a sinistra. A differenza di altri paesi europei (tipo l’Inghilterra), le strade italiane non appaiono così strane all’occhio americano.
Con: Gas is expensive
Contro: la benzina costa parecchio
All gas is imported. Because Italy does not produce its own gasoline industry, they have to pay to have it imported in from Russia, or other countries. This drives the price up and up.
Tutto il gas viene importato. Poiché l’Italia non produce la propria benzina, deve pagare per importarla dalla Russia o da altri paesi. Questo fa salire sempre più il prezzo.
Pro: Public transit is effective

Taking the bus is a completely normal thing in Italy to get around a city, or from nearby paesini into a bigger city. If you want to travel to another city for a weekend getaway, there are trains available for affordable prices, and they are on time more often than not. Driving from Rome to Milan will take a long time, a lot of gas, and a lot of money. Taking a Frecciarosa train saves time, hassle, and money. Most locals agree – taking public transit from city to city just makes more sense than driving.
Prendere l’autobus per spostarsi in città, o da paesini vicini in una città più grande è del tutto normale in Italia. Se desiderate raggiungere un’altra città per il fine settimana, ci sono treni a prezzi convenienti e il più delle volte puntuali. Guidare da Roma a Milano richiede molto tempo, molta benzina e molti soldi. Prendere un Frecciarossa fa risparmiare tempo, fatica e denaro. Con: Motorini drivers are reckless

Motorcycles and scooters do not have to abide by the same rules of the road as standard automobiles. For this reason, to my American eye, scooters and their drivers make crazy moves on the road, squeezing between vehicles and popping up over the curb whenever necessary.

No country is perfect. For Americans, living in Europe can seem an idyllic dream, but the reality is that every country has its own strengths and weaknesses. These have been my opinions on the perks and drawbacks of living in Italy as an American citizen. And if I am being completely honest, for all of the “cons” listed above, I still think moving to Italy was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. If you are feeling the call in your soul to move across the ocean, don’t let the possible downsides hold you back. The pros outweigh the cons. Trust your gut and do what feels right.
Nessun paese è perfetto. Per gli americani, vivere in Europa può essere un bellissimo sogno, ma la verità è che ogni paese ha i suoi pregi e i suoi difetti. Questi sono i miei pro e contro del vivere in Italia da cittadini americani.
