In the months leading up to my son’s birth, I made the decision to raise him in Italian, despite being an English mother-tongue who learned Italian as an adult. The desire stemmed mostly from the fact that my husband is part-Italian, but I also wanted to make sure that he had an opportunity I never had: to be bilingual from birth.
To help me on my journey, I memorised a number of famous Italian filastrocche, which means nursery rhymes in Italian. Filastrocche are an amazing resource for parents as they teach children new vocabulary, expose them to the sounds and rhythm of a language, and can be sung at almost any time, be it during a diaper change, in the car, or as the child is drifting off to sleep.
Below I’ve included ten of the most popular nursery rhymes that Italians sing to their children, along with the lyrics, the English translation and a YouTube video to help you learn the tune. I hope you find them as useful as I have!
