Throughout Italy’s long and rich history, the country has had plenty of time to make a name for itself. Italian cuisine is one of the most beloved cuisines in the world. This country is the birthplace of the Renaissance and all of the glorious Arts that came from it. The Italian people have founded world renowned companies dedicated to the fine and luxurious life. Even the very history of Italy has become a story of legend known across the globe. This is a non-exhaustive list of just 20 of the products and things that Italy is famous for.
L’Italia ha una lunga e ricca storia che le ha permesso di affermarsi a livello mondiale. La sua cucina, considerata tra le più apprezzate a livello internazionale. Il Rinascimento è nato in Italia e con esso tutte le grandi opere d’arte che ancora oggi sono ammirate nel mondo. 1. Pasta / Pasta
What makes Italy famous? Obviously, starting at Number 1 on this list is pasta. There are innumerable types of pasta, from varying ingredients to varying shapes. Some estimate that there are over 350 types of pasta credited to Italy. Then of course, there is the sugo (the sauce) that completes the dish. Some favourites include cacio e pepe, spaghetti alla carbonara, tagliatelle al ragù bolognese, or lasagne al forno. Pasta is a staple in Italy; so much so that, in some regions, Italians eat a pasta dish once a day.
Cosa rende l’Italia famosa? Indubbiamente, al primo posto troviamo la pasta, alimento di cui esistono innumerevoli varietà e qualità, ciascuna con ingredienti e forme diverse. Si stima che in Italia ci siano oltre 350 tipi di pasta. La pasta viene accompagnata da una vasta gamma di sughi, tra i quali figurano alcuni tra i più celebri: la cacio e pepe, la carbonara, il ragù bolognese e le lasagne al forno. Pizza margherita. Pizza ai quattro formaggi. Pizza alla diavola. These are just a few of the favorite pizzas and their toppings available in Italy. Nearly every pizzeria will offer these standards. The most well-known version of Italian pizza hales from Naples: the pizza napoletano. These wood-fired pizzas are a favorite throughout the world, both with tourists, and with local Italians alike.

There are many different variations of coffees drank around the world, but the beloved espresso (caffè) and cappuccino are uniquely Italian. Truthfully, coffee doesn’t originate from Italy, and the plant from which coffee beans are grown can’t even prosper in Italian climates. Italy is known for coffee purely because of its delicious usage of extra-dark roasted beans. The resulting bitter liquid tastes amazing, and even better when you add steamed milk and foam.
Esistono numerose varianti di caffè consumate in tutto il mondo, tuttavia l’espresso e il cappuccino sono tipici dell’Italia. Ancient Italian civilisations have been growing grapes and producing wine for millennia – even long before the Ancient Romans. Before them, the Greek settlers in Italy, the Etruscans, and the Mycenaean civilisation in Italy grew grapevines for wine.
Qual è il paese che produce più vino al mondo? L’Italia detiene questo titolo grazie al suo clima, ideale per la coltivazione di vigneti rigogliosi. 5. Gelato / Gelato
Gelato may be considered “the Italian version of ice cream”, but the two are very different treats, indeed. Italian gelato, a special treat available in grocery stores around the world, is made with more milk than cream, resulting in a silkier, smoother texture. Gelato also tends to be denser. Due to the differences in ingredients, gelato also tends to be more flavourful than ice cream; that is to say, mint gelato tastes mintier than mint ice cream.

Personally, I think parmesan cheese belongs on just about every dish. Cacio e pepe, pizza margherita, and chicken (or, more authentically, eggplant) parmesan are all favorite entrees that require a specific Italian cheese, easily found in all supermarkets of the Western world.

7. Architecture / Architettura
Upon a simple Google image search of “Italy”, I find a few simple geographical maps, and a whole lot of photographs of magnificent buildings. These buildings are famous because of their architectural ingenuity and beauty. Architecture in Italy was, and still is, a matter of beauty, like an art form. Some of the greatest architects of Italy’s history include Filippo Brunelleschi (who designed the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence) and Andrea Palladio (who designed the City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto).
Facendo una semplice ricerca di immagini su Google con la parola “Italia”, è possibile trovare alcune mappe geografiche di base, ma soprattutto una vasta selezione di fotografie che ritraggono magnifici edifici. Queste costruzioni sono famose per la loro ingegnosità architettonica e la loro bellezza. L’architettura in Italia ha sempre rivestito una particolare importanza, considerata una vera e propria forma d’arte. Italy, and it’s buildings, is covered in 2-dimensional art. Canvas paintings, wall and ceiling frescoes, and painted wooden altarpieces are a sight to wonder at. Art museums like the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery in Florence, and the entirety of the Vatican City (technically not in the country of Italy, but I digress) hold and display hundreds of examples of Italian paintings. Some of the greatest Italian painters include Raphael (who created the fresco The School of Athens in the Vatican) and Leonardo da Vinci (who painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper).
L’Italia e i suoi edifici sono ricchi di arte bidimensionale, con dipinti su tela, affreschi su pareti e soffitti, e altari in legno dipinti che rappresentano uno spettacolo meraviglioso da ammirare. Musei d’arte come la Galleria degli Uffizi e la Galleria dell’Accademia a Firenze, insieme all’intera Città del Vaticano (che, tecnicamente non appartiene all’Italia, ma sto divagando), conservano e mostrano centinaia di esempi di dipinti italiani. Interspersed between the paintings hung on display in art museums, are another hundred artistic masterpieces created by famous Italians. These 3-dimensional statues and figurines are equally as magnificent as the paintings, and equally as famous. Some of the most well-known sculptors in Italy are Michelangelo (who sculpted the David), and Donatello (who sculpted another famous statue, coincidentally also called David).
***I think it is important to note that all 4 of the famous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are named after famous Italian artists of renown. If you ask any child to list as many historic artists as they can, they will likely start with Italian Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello, purely because of the crimefighting turtles.
Immersi tra i quadri esposti nei musei, si trovano un centinaio di capolavori italiani creati da famosi artisti italiani. Queste sculture e statuette tridimensionali sono magnifiche e celebri tanto quanto i dipinti. *** Credo sia importante sottolineare che tutte e 4 le famose Tartarughe Ninja sono state chiamate con i nomi di importanti artisti italiani. Se si chiede a qualsiasi bambino di elencare il maggior numero possibile di artisti storici, molto probabilmente inizieranno con i nomi degli italiani Raffaello, Leonardo, Michelangelo e Donatello, proprio grazie alla fama delle tartarughe che combattono il crimine.

After listing off 3 forms of visual art, we come to a conclusion with the performing arts. Italy is also famous for its opera composers. Vocal music students all across the Western world are required to study opera, and to rehearse and learn from Italian arias (solo songs, often extracted from an opera). The most famous Italian operas and their composers include La Traviata by Verdi; La Bohème by Puccini; and Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, both written by Austrian Mozart with libretto (the text) by Italian Lorenzo da Ponte.

One of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan, is located in northern Italy. Valentino, Gucci, Versace, Prada, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and many other high-end fashion brands hail from Italy. Milan Fashion Week is one of the most important weeks in the fashion and modelling industry across the globe.
Nel nord Italia, Milano è una delle capitali mondiali della moda. Marchi di alta moda come Valentino, Gucci, Versace, Prada, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, e molti altri hanno le loro radici in Italia. La Settimana della Moda di Milano rappresenta un evento di grande rilievo per l’industria della moda e della modellistica a livello globale.
12. Leather / Pelle
Leather is used for creating a lot of products. Notably, leather handbags are a staple in high fashion. Leather belts and wallets are trendy. Leather boots are durable and classy all at the same time. Ever since the Middle Ages, Italy has been known for producing some of the highest quality leather products. Today, there are entire stores dedicated to selling only leather products, with shelves piled high with wallets, purses, handbags, briefcases, even thin strips of leather fashioned into a bookmark.
La pelle è un materiale utilizzato per creare una vasta gamma di prodotti, tra cui le borse in pelle che rappresentano un elemento imprescindibile nella moda di alta qualità. Italy is known for a few luxury car companies, like Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, along with Ferrari.

14. Vespa / Vespa
The Vespa scooter is iconic, possibly the most iconic object in this entire list. This Italian scooter company has won over the hearts of the Italian people, and Italophiles (people who adore all things relating to the Italian culture) alike. What was once an effort to recycle military plane parts after WWII and turn them into affordable transportation for the masses, has turned itself into an iconic luxury item. The name “Vespa” comes directly from the Italian word wasp, meaning “hornet”, which is what the manufacturers thought the first designs looked and sounded like.

15. Colosseum / Colosseo
One of the most iconic landmarks in Italy is also one of the oldest. The Colosseum is an architectural wonder, and is also the largest ancient amphitheater. The construction of this massive theatre/arena was finished in 80 AD. Apart from being impressively massive, and still in good condition today, this arena is most famous for hosting gladiator shows.
Uno dei luoghi più iconici d’Italia è anche tra i più antichi: il Colosseo. Questa meraviglia architettonica rappresenta il più grande anfiteatro dell’antichità. La sua costruzione fu completata nell’80 d.C. Oltre ad essere davvero imponente, e ancora in ottime condizioni, l’edificio è per lo più famoso per essere stato il palcoscenico per gli spettacoli dei gladiatori.

While the Vatican City is technically an extraterritorial country not a part of the country of Italy, it is quite literally inside of and surrounded by Italy. Because of their intermingling histories and their close proximity, it is easy to understand why many people think of Italy when they think about the Holy See. The home of the Pope is important for Catholics all across the globe. For non-Catholics, however, many think of the magnificent frescoes painted on the walls of the Sistine Chapel, and especially the scene painted on the ceiling by Michelangelo.
Tecnicamente la Città del Vaticano è un paese extraterritoriale che non fa parte dell’Italia, tuttavia è situata geograficamente all’interno del territorio italiano e circondata dallo stesso. Grazie alla loro vicinanza e alla loro storia condivisa, è facile intuire perché la gente pensa immediatamente all’Italia quanto si parla della Santa Sede. La casa del Papa è di importanza cruciale per i cattolici in tutto il mondo. Allo stesso tempo, per coloro che non sono cattolici, l’attenzione si sposta spesso sui magnifici affreschi presenti sulle pareti della Cappella Sistina e in particolare sulla celebre scena dipinta sul soffitto da Michelangelo.
17. Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius / Pompei e il Vesuvio
The tragic story of the buried city of Pompeii has entranced the minds of children and adults for centuries. After Mount Vesuvius – actually a volcano – erupted in 79 AD, it covered the city in ash. Today, hikers can climb to the top of Vesuvius. Visitors can also walk through the rediscovered city, stepping back in time to a city once buried without warning and now excavated to reveal the secrets of the past. Continued active excavations are still happening in the city to this day, revealing yet more and more of this once-lost city.

18. Leaning Tower of Pisa / Torre di Pisa
This architectural “fail” has won a lot of interest by travellers; the iconic “holding the tower up” photograph is a must-do for any tourist visiting the city of Pisa. The tall tower built in Pisa was mistakenly constructed atop soft soil and began to tilt even while construction was ongoing. The fact that the tower leans is undeniable. At one point, it tilted a full 5.5 degrees. What many tourists do not know, however, is that this tower is actually the bell tower of the cathedral with which it shares a piazza.

Artsy photography that inspires those dreaming of a seaside fairytale is often set in the five little towns that make up the Cinque Terre. While most people do not know exactly where the Cinque Terre are on the map, or that Cinque Terre is not the name of a single town, many people can identify it in photographs of colorful buildings perched on steep hills and cliff sides plunging down into crystalline blue waters. The 6-hour trek from the first town to the last is a popular excursion for young travellers to Italy.

Built into a lagoon and comprising of over 100 tiny islands connected by walking bridges, the structure of Venice is particularly unique. Perhaps the city’s most remarkable landmark is the Grand Canal, the biggest and widest of the canals winding their way around the city like roads made out of water. The canals are filled with water taxis; garbage trucks that are actually tiny barges; and the iconic sleek, black gondolas with their stripe-shirt gondoliers.
