The most obvious option to steer clear of the rain would be to stay indoors. Why not take shelter from the rain in one of the largest and most famous museums in the country? Purchase online tickets for the Uffizi Gallery and quickly make your way to the city center. The art museum has two levels and can take a few hours to see the whole thing. For the common visitor, the average length of visit is typically around 3 to 4 hours. Avid art enthusiasts can easily spend the entire day marvelling at the masterworks displayed there, like Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and La Primavera.

Another covered landmark that would be good to view when it is drizzling rain is the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral and all its components. This cathedral, lovingly known to locals as the Duomo, is made up of six different entrances (all but one of which require tickets): the Dome, the Bell Tower, the Baptistery, the Museum of Works, Santa Reparata, and the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral itself. On a typical, sunshiny day, the lines for each of these entrances (especially for the free Cathedral, climbing the Dome, and entering the Bell Tower) are ridiculously long. The lines may still exist on a rainy day, but they will be much shorter than usual. As long as it’s not severely pouring, take advantage of the shorter- than-average lines and try to see all six Duomo landmarks in one day.

The upper floor is what makes this building so unique. It’s a food court! Along the outer walls are various stands that sell specialty foods like lampredotto, pizza, sushi, and roasted meats. At the center bar counter, you can grab a glass of wine, a caffè, and any other drink that suits your fancy. A person could easily spend an hour or two avoiding the rain by filling their stomachs at the market. Mercato Centrale makes for a perfect lunch, aperitivo, dinner, or it’s-raining-and-I-don’t-want-to-stay-out-and-get- drenched break.

A popular in-person cooking class is hosted at Mercato Centrale (#2 on this list) amongst the stands in the food court section. You can choose to sign up for a pasta and sugo class, a pizza-making class, or maybe even a wine tasting and critiquing class. Food, fun, and education. What’s not to love?

Even the newest Hollywood Blockbusters are shown in this cinema, available in both the original language or dubbed in Italian. You don’t have to worry about the latest Marvel movie being spoiled for you just because you were traveling. Grab a ticket, a bucket of popcorn, and find the best seats in the house for a movie afternoon while escaping a rainy day.

If the downpour has you trapped inside your hotel and it doesn’t look like it well let up any time soon, there is still another way to enjoy some Italian culture that you can’t always find at home. Open up your favorite streaming service like Netflix and check what films are available. Services like Netflix have different options to choose from depending on the country your electronic device is currently in – so as long as you are in Italy, you can watch everything Italians can find on their profiles. Find an Italian film that looks interesting and relax, warm and dry, in your hotel room with a movie. Most films will have options for English dubbing or subtitles; I recommend keeping the original audio but adding English subtitles. For an added challenge for language learners: try to keep both the audio and the subtitles in Italian and see what you can comprehend.

The city is surprisingly small and easily walkable; you can make it from place to place with an umbrella in sprinkling rain without much hassle. If the rain starts to come down really hard, there are amazing places to stop for an hour or two while you wait out the downpour.
