There is a limit to how many foreigners the Italian government can admit each year, as stated in a document called the Decreto Flussi. It is rather restricted, so the government tends to favor giving visas to immigrants with highly desirable work positions. The definition of “highly desirable work positions” changes annually based on what kind of workers the country has the greatest need for. For this reason, many Americans have found it easiest to work part-time while studying full-time on a Study Visa. It is still possible to get a work visa for all of the job opportunities listed below, but please understand that your visa application is not guaranteed. If you happen to be a dual citizen, or are married to a citizen, then this visa issue does not apply to you.

Au pairs are basically live-in nannies or housekeepers that help the family with whatever is needed to run the household. Daily duties may include cleaning, cooking, caring for the children, or even giving casual English lessons to the members of the family. Au pairs are different from nannies or housecleaners, however, because they are treated like one of the family. Usually, the family hiring the au pair offers housing, food, and sometimes even a car for chauffeuring around the children. They are also typically invited to join in family events, like family dinners or social outings. The au pair is still entitled to time off, away from the house and the children. For some, this looks like an entire day off once or twice a week, or it may be a particular time period during the day in which the au pair is “off-duty”. Pay allowance for au pairs is typically fairly low, but it evens out when you take into account that au pairs do not have to pay for room and board. For young travelers that don’t want to do typical office work, this is a great work option that also offers the most authentic cultural experience, and the domestic chores hardly feel like work!

Many members of “expat groups” are family members of a military service person stationed at a base abroad.
