YES! Depending on your life situation, you will need a visa, and upon arrival, to apply for a permesso di soggiorno (a residency card). Each situation has unique requirements, and some pathways are more difficult than others, but it is entirely possible for the average American to move to Italy if that is their life dream.

It can be a long and complex process proving that you are, in fact, a citizen by the blood of your ancestors. Do a little Google research, and if you think you fit the bill for citizenship, I highly recommend hiring legal counsel to help you through the process.

Another path that only works for a select group of people includes the family members of Italian citizens. If your children, parents, or spouse are Italian citizens and already living there, you can apply for a special type of visa for family reunification. Your loved ones can simply write an affidavit stating that they want you to come live with them in Italy, and the rest of the visa application suddenly becomes much easier.

It is possible to move to Italy on a work visa, but it is not easy. The number of non-EU visas given out and to whom is determined by a document called the Decreto Flussi. When the number of work visas to give out to Americans run out, they are out until the Decreto Flussi is reopened again. For this reason, the Italian government tends to be selective about who they give a work visa to. If you are a highly skilled labourer, doctor, or researcher, you are in luck! For English as a Foreign Language teachers like myself, the odds are not in our favour. Self-employed entrepreneurs can also apply for a special type of work visa meant specifically for self-employment.

Work visas for dependent workers are more easily earned by highly skilled workers. Your employer can apply for a Nulla Osta on your behalf, which you will then need to present when you apply for your work visa at an Italian consulate.

Italy is a wonderful place to plan to retire! It is also possible to move to Italy for “elective residence”, i.e. retirement. Elective residents are not allowed to work in Italy. You must provide proof of financial means to support yourself for the duration of your visa by means of savings, your retirement fund, selling/renting properties, or other private incomes.

For up to 90 days, you can enter Italy on a tourist visa, which is not a physical visa, so you do not need to book an appointment at the consulate. Beyond those 90 days, however, you will need a visa. In that case, you will need to jump through all the same hoops as those who are trying to move to Italy permanently. This includes booking an appointment at your local consulate general, obtaining a visa, and applying for a permesso di soggiorno upon entrance in Italy. A work visa may be difficult to obtain for a short-term relocation, but the study and elective residence visas are ideal! Both visas
require you to show proof of financial means, which is much easier to save up for if you are only planning to stay in Italy for a handful of months.

I’m going to be completely honest with you. Technically, you can import your car from the States to Italy. But I wouldn’t.

Italian streets are narrow, corners are tight, and parallel parking is a nightmare. European cars are small and extremely compact to fit these conditions. For this reason, I recommend selling your American Honda, and buy a Fiat once you get to your new home.

However, if you are attached to your American car, remember that it is possible to ship it to Italy. You will be required to pay an import duty and registration fee. The standard VAT for imported cars is 20%. Recently purchased used vehicles will pay a higher tax fee. If you have been in possession of your car for more than 12 months, and can prove it, you may be able to import your car duty tax-free. There are import shipping companies out there that specialise in transporting motorised vehicles that would be happy to help you ship your car from the States to Italy without the hassle.
