O Mio Babbino Caro: Lyrics & English Translation

At the very beginning of Pixar’s Luca, we see two Italian gentlemen out fishing on a boat at night. As they talk about the existence of sea monsters, the elder of the two starts playing a song on his gramophone. The song was O Mio Babbino Caro, a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father and the family of her beloved Rinuccio threaten to separate the lovers.

If you and your Luca-loving kids are interested in learning this operatic classic, then keep on reading! Below you will find the Italian lyrics, followed by the English translation. Enjoy!

O Mio Babbino Caro – Italian Lyrics

O mio babbino caro
Mi piace, è bello, bello
Vo’ andare in Porta Rossa
A comperar l’anello

Sì, sì, ci voglio andare
E se l’amassi indarno
Andrei sul Ponte Vecchio
Ma per buttarmi in Arno

Mi struggo e mi tormento
O Dio, vorrei morir

Babbo, pietà, pietà
Babbo, pietà, pietà

O Mio Babbino Caro – English Translation

Oh my dear papa
I like him, he is handsome, handsome
I want to go to Porta Rossa
To buy the ring!

Yes, yes, I want to go there!
And if my love were in vain,
I would go to Ponte Vecchio
and throw myself in the Arno!

I am anguished and tormented!
Oh God, I’d like to die!
Papa, have pity, have pity!
Papa, have pity, have pity!
