Italian Word of the Day: Settembre (September)

September, or settembre in Italian, is easily my favourite month of the year. The days are warm without being oppressively so, the nights are cool, there is still enough daylight to enjoy outdoor activities in the late afternoon, and you can smell the arrival of autumn in the air.

IPA: /setˈtɛm.bre/
settembre

Settembre is the ninth month (nono mese) of the year according to the Julian and Gregorian calendars and it is made up of 30 days (trenta giorni). As is the case with all months of the year, settembre isn’t capitalised in Italian as it is in English.

It derives from the Latin septem meaning sette (seven) because originally it was the seventh month of the Roman year.

Il mese di settembre dura 30 giorni.

The month of September is 30 days long.

The star sign (segno zodiacale) for those born in settembre is either Vergine (Virgo) if you were born between September 1st and September 22nd or Bilancia (Libra) if you were born after the 22nd.

From this word we also get the adjective settembrino which is used to describe things or phenomena closely associated with this particular month such as frutti settembrini (September fruits) or aria settembrina (September air).
