September, or settembre in Italian, is easily my favourite month of the year. The days are warm without being oppressively so, the nights are cool, there is still enough daylight to enjoy outdoor activities in the late afternoon, and you can smell the arrival of autumn in the air.
Settembre is the ninth month (nono mese) of the year according to the Julian and Gregorian calendars and it is made up of 30 days (trenta giorni). As is the case with all months of the year, settembre isn’t capitalised in Italian as it is in English.
It derives from the Latin septem meaning sette (seven) because originally it was the seventh month of the Roman year.
